Chairman Thompson Releases Statement Marking 21 Years Since the September 11 Attacks

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement commemorating the twenty-first anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks:

“Twenty-one years ago, our nation experienced the deadliest act of terror in our nation’s history. On this solemn day, will never forget the thousands of lives lost and we strive to preserve their legacy. We will never forget the courage of the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way, many making the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow Americans.

“Twenty-one years ago, we took our shared pain and grief and came together as a nation to show the world that terror and hate cannot divide us. While we have greatly strengthened our homeland security since 2001, we know we must remain vigilant in the face of all threats – whether foreign or domestic. We must be able to adapt to the new threats we encounter every day – including increasing threats to our democracy and elections, cyber threats, and the rise of domestic extremism.

“As we remember September 11, 2001, not only do we use this day to reflect as nation, but resolve to continue our work together to keep the nation secure.”
